This work contains proofs of the continual creation of the world, following the methods of Jewish Philosophy, Kabala, and Chasidus. Appended are several Chasidic Discourses. There are also notes on Midrash and Maimonides Guide to the Perplexed, and some additional glosses of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

According to tradition, the Tzemach Tzedek composed this work in connection with his travels to Peterburg in 5603/1843 to testify at the inquisitions then in progress that were putting adverse pressure on Jewish religious practice and Torah study, specifically Kabala and Chasidus. However, not everything here dates from that era, for the practice of the Tzemach Tzedek was to add material from time to time.

In conclusion, the Tzemach Tzedek writes, I have expounded, to the limit of my powers, ten proofs that the world is continually brought into being [by the Creator]. Nevertheless, the essence is simple belief, because it is more beneficial. However, one whose heart is troubled would do better to investigate these logical arguments than remain entangled [in doubts]. And all this having been said, the principal means of strengthening belief is to actively engage in Torah study, for Torah is called Truth, and is the source of belief.
